UN Report says Iraq was better under Sadam?
At least where torture is concerned.

From The Toronto Star.

GENEVA (AP) — Torture in Iraq is reportedly worse now than it was under deposed president Saddam Hussein, the United Nations' chief anti-torture expert said Thursday.

Manfred Nowak described a situation where militias, insurgent groups, government forces and others disregard rules on the humane treatment of prisoners.

"What most people tell you is that the situation as far as torture is concerned now in Iraq is totally out of hand," said Nowak, the global body's special investigator on torture.

"The situation is so bad many people say it is worse than it has been in the times of Saddam Hussein."

Days after the Iraqi provisional government was granted power from the Americans, I remember reading about Marines stumbling upon Iraqi police (or similar) torturing the heck out of some prisoners. They were ordered to move on by their superiors (sorry, no url). I remember thiking "Okay, here we go!" Too true, it seems.

Who to blame this torture fest on? I mean, everyone is doing it over there! Well, I guess the usual suspects will blame to report's author. Meanwhile, the toture will continue.

I guess it's just another symptom of freedom and democracy.

The British medical journal the Lancet, released results of a new study to determine an actual accounting of Iraqis killed during the current U.S.-led war. According to the Lancet there have been 600,000 Iraqis killed since the beginning of this war.

Further information from the Wall Street Journal adds interesting context to these numbers. In its report the Wall Street Journal noted that "Human Rights Watch has estimated Saddam Hussein's regime killed 250,000 to 290,000 people over 20 years." This means that in U.S. led efforts to "bring freedom and democracy" to Iraq twice as many people have died in 4 years than were killed by Saddam Hussein's entire regime.

The problem is, those numbers are not in context. Most of that (I would guess at least 70%) is Iraqis killing each other as oppossed to Americans killing Iraqis. So you cant blame Bush for it.
