What do you think? Is it a sport? If not how do you differentiate?

it can't be put in the olympics because it can't be marked, like other sports....

but having so many hard movements, it is considered a sport too...

i personally think that is something between a sport and an art...

Definitely a sport...I've had more of a workout from Latin dancing ballroom or jazz class than I have from going to the stupid gym lol.

^^ person who said it can't be marked is wrong...lol it is marked, that's how the judges work during competitions. You lose points for incorrect completion of certain moves and quality of over all choreography.

How can u ballroom dancers view it as a sport I don’t get it!

Dancers try so hard with their outfits, tanning lotions, makeup, and what not. This never occurs in normal sports. From what I saw at a competition it’s more of an artistic/recreational act then a sport. In my opinion the only dance u could call 25% sport....is some how-to-lose-weight dancing tape.

realistically, you have to have talent to dance, not questioning that at all, but, how do you mark it?? look at all the shit that happened with all the ice dancing and judges getting paid off, they dont wanna go through all that shit again, so it will never be a true, professional sport

the only implication of the word 'professional' is that you get paid for it. and we know that some dancers are infact paid (i am not referring to stripers, im relating it to sport) and so TRUE vs PROFESSIONAL does not really relate. synchronized swimming, figure skating, gymnastics are ALL sports (like dance) which get marked not by TIMERS but by a panel of judges. the fact that some bias can occur within the judge panel does not undermine the validity of dance being a sport.

It is definitely a sport, you see, when I play the sport of my choice (soccer or hockey) it is like I lose control, I don't think about anything, I just let go.

Same goes for dancing, especially trance/euro....mixed with a few drinks....I am UNSTOPPABLE!

lol, i don't know about all the doinkies out there that spend so much time on the outfits and such, but for me it takes more muscle strength to pull of a proper move in ballroom, or in jazz than it does in tennis. I do both...

As for the comment after this one....you can pay off a judge in ANY sport...duh lol. As for marking it, if you step with the wrong foot, or execute a step incorrectly you lose points. Not to mention every routine has requirements.

People try it competitively before you come to conclusions, it's not all glitter lol. (i HATE glitter:S)

SUP? *bling bling*

I know a few people that dance professionaly, and they put as much effort into it, if not more, than any other sportsman. In fact because dancing can get so technical, sometimes it requires more effort to master a particular move or a particular setpiece. Other sports tend to rely on physical strentgh, where dancing IMO relys more on metnal concentration.

And even though Jan_na mentioned that sometimes the physical requirements can overshadow those physical requirements that are required in a tennis game, I dare you to try and play American Football and Hockey =)

Dancing is a sport, no doubt, it is an art that requires perfection!
